Shoulder Sprains & Strains

Our NYC Chiropractor in NYC Provides Relief for Shoulder Pain, Including Sprains and Strains

It's not uncommon for people to sometimes feel as if we are carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. Sometimes that feeling translates to literal shoulder pain, which can be caused by a variety of different things and prompts many to head to our Midtown chiropractor. In many cases, shoulder strain is a result of pulling or tearing a muscle or it may be a sprained muscle ligament. At Rockefeller Health & Medical, our Hell's Kitchen chiropractor can help identify what is causing your shoulder pain, so we can start working with in you toward both immediate and long term solutions.

Woman suffering shoulder pain and strain Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is made up of several joints and muscles that are responsible for the range of motion in your arm, including:

  • Humerus (upper arm bone)
  • Scapula (shoulder blade) The upper arm and shoulder blade connect together with a socket, called a glenoid.
  • Clavicle (collarbone)

If your shoulder is in pain, the role motion plays in the intensity of that pain can provide clues to the cause, as well as the best course of treatment.

Tendon Inflammation or Tears

The tendons are connecting cords that bring muscles to bones, and inflamed tendons usually mean tendonitis. Tendonitis usually affects shoulders via the rotator cuff tendons or bicep tendons. Some people have this kind of pain in their shoulder only occasionally, such as after a day of lifting things overhead, or throwing a ball, this is acute tendonitis. Chronic tendonitis can also happen, if these activities are a frequent part of life, or there is arthritis or other degenerative diseases present. Bursitis is often associated with tendonitis and occurs when fluid filled sacs in the joints, called bursae become swollen due to overuse. With both of these conditions, chiropractic care can lead you on the right track toward feeling better.

Instability or Dislocated Shoulder

The shoulder can become instable when the upper arm bone comes out of the shoulder socket. These dislocations may be complete, where the ball has become completely disconnected from the socket, or partial, often referred to as a subluxation. At Rockefeller Health and Medical, we regularly deal with subluxations. In many cases, people go about their lives with pain from these partial dislocations of the shoulder without realizing it.

Shoulder Fractures

Fractures can occur in any of the bones in the shoulder, including the clavicle, humerus, or scapula and often happen after a fall or an injury from a car accident or contact sport. These injuries bring a high level of swelling and bruising, which take time to heal. That journey to healing can be made easier with chiropractic care from Rockefeller Health and Medical.

Strains & Sprains

While many shoulder injuries come from traumatic accidents or events, in most cases common strains and sprains are to blame. Still, just because the cause is common, doesn't make the pain less uncomfortable, and at Rockefeller Health & Medical we strive to be the chiropractor in NYC that helps you move beyond the pain and get back to normal.

While strains, resulting from pulled muscles, or sprains from pulled or torn ligaments can be treated with over the counter medications, many find that longer term solutions come from alternating heat and cold therapy, through hot showers or compresses. Alternating hot and cold in 20 minute intervals can be especially effective.
