Anterior Cruciate Injuries

Chiropractic Care And Anterior Cruciate Injuries

The anterior cruciate ligament, also known as ACL, plays a pivotal role in the stabilization of the knee joint. Its role is to limit the rotational and twisting movement of the knee joint and prevent extreme forward movement. The chiropractic team at Rockefeller Health & Medical can assist in the prevention and healing of this common injury. We proudly serve all of NYC, including Midtown, East, West, Manhattan, Rockefeller Center, and the 10036 zip code.

What Causes an Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury?

An ACL injury is commonly described as a “pop” in the knee, followed by swelling, instability, and extreme pain when bearing weight. While often linked to sports such as downhill skiing, soccer, basketball, and football, any sudden stop or change in direction can lead to an ACL tear, sprain, or strain.

Common actions leading to anterior cruciate ligament tears include:

  • Suddenly stopping, slowing, changing in direction
  • Pivoting with a firmly planted foot
  • Sudden, hard, or direct hit to the knee
  • Incorrect landing after a jump

Symptoms of an ACL Injury

In addition to the loud “pop,” ACL injury patients experience:

  • Intense pain
  • Swelling
  • Instability or popping sensation
  • Pain and weakness when bearing weight
  • Decreased range of motion

Treatment for an Anterior Cruciate Injury

Immediately following an ACL injury, the R.I.C.E. model is recommended.

  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation

Some patients may require orthopedic care and surgery, but many find success through rehabilitation exercises, rest, and chiropractic treatment. Your chiropractor can help on a fundamental level, improving the overall functioning and health of your nervous system. Chiropractic manipulations can help restore joint mobility and speed up the healing process.
