Elbow Bursitis

Rockefeller Health & Medical Discusses Ways Chiropractic Relieves Elbow Bursitis Pain

Have you ever heard of elbow bursitis? Do not worry if you have not, here at Rockefeller Health & Medical we have. Better yet, we know how to help with it. That is why we are your chiropractor for Midtown West and the entire New York City area. So … What is elbow bursitis? We are so happy that you asked!

Man suffering from elbow pain What Is Elbow Bursitis?

According to WebMD and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), bursitis – also called Working Man’s disease – is an inflammation or irritation of the bursa. This is a fluid-filled sac that cushions the tendons and bones around a joint. In the elbow, bursitis occurs in the bursa at the tip of the elbow, the olecranon.

A healthy bursa is flat. Bursitis develops when that flat bursa becomes infected, inflamed, and/or otherwise irritated which leads to additional fluid accumulation. There are a number of reasons why this might occur.

What Causes Elbow Bursitis?

Overuse, trauma, repeated pressure or movement, and other triggers are the general causes of elbow bursitis. More specifically, these causes include:

  • Prolonged pressure such as repeatedly leaning on the elbow on hard surfaces for extended periods.
  • Trauma like that which is caused by a hard blow to the elbow.
  • Occupational vulnerabilities such as those heating and air techs or plumber face from the propensity for leaning on and crawling with the tips of their elbows.
  • Medical Conditions like kidney failure, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Infection caused by bacteria in the bursa.

Symptoms

The first sign of this condition is often swelling. This is quickly followed by pain as the swelling continues and the bursa stretches. This pain is commonly made worse by bending or putting direct pressure on the elbow.

If the bursitis is caused by infection, warmth and redness may accompany the swelling and pain. This may spread to other areas of the arm if left untreated. In the worst cases, it can enter the bloodstream and pose a serious health risk.

How Our Midtown Chiropractor Can Help

Prescription medications may have unwanted side effects. They could also be habit-forming. Surgery is invasive and carries its own risks. Through routine chiropractic care at the hands of our Hell's Kitchen chiropractor, our patients receive a safe, whole-body approach to healing. It is known to reduce restriction of the joints to return stability to your entire central nervous and musculoskeletal system.
